A Beginner’s Guide to DIY Carpet Cleaning

Carpet cleaning can be a difficult chore. You need to use the right products that won’t damage your carpets and that are safe for pets and children. Before you choose a method, you should do research on the chemicals and the outcomes. You also need to identify what needs to be treated with your carpet (odor, pet stains, discoloration). Once you identify what needs to be treated, then you can better determine how you should clean it. Before moving on to the type of cleaning agent you should use, you also need to account for the material of the carpet. Some materials can be easily ruined, so you need to make sure you are using something that is safe on your carpet type. `

Odor

The quickest and easiest way to remove odor from your carpet is baking soda. Remove all furniture in the surrounding areas and sprinkle some baking soda. The most effective plan is to leave it overnight, as this will help the baking soda absorb all the odors. After it sits, go ahead and vacuum it up. Why baking soda? The small particles can get down in the carpet and neutralize odors, and it’s super easy to clean up.

Pet Stains

For this, you will need white vinegar and baking soda. Pour the white vinegar on the pet stain but be careful not to pour too much. It is always better to start out with a little; sometimes when you use too much it can attract dirt. Next, sprinkle some baking soda on the vinegar. You will know if it’s working if you can hear the chemicals reacting, which means it is lifting the stain out.

Let this sit for a day or two until it is completely dry. You can place a paper towel or large bowl over it so it does not get stepped on. When it is dry, you can go ahead and vacuum right over it. Yep, no scrubbing! You can even combine this with the odor cleaning and just spread baking soda all over and vacuum it up.

These are some great, fool-proof techniques to clean your carpet. They don’t require you to get on your hands and knees, so it’s basically minimum labor. These also use safe ingredients so you don’t have to worry about breathing in harsh chemicals or ruining your carpets. A lot of cleaning supplies sold in stores contain harsh chemicals that when used in large amounts can be harmful or even damage your carpet.

Carpets get a lot of traffic, whether from pets, kids, or other family members, so it is important to use safe products. Of course, if you have carpets that need more deep cleaning, please contact Endy’s Carpet Cleaning and we can answer your questions.
